Coached Practice Sessions / Social Sails
PREREQUISITE: Completion of an Adult Learn to Sail class or equivalent experience with instructor approval.
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Coached Practice Sessions on Wednesdays and Sundays are the next step after Learn to Sail classes for new sailors, helping to build confidence and independence on the water. With coaching from an experienced HSC sailor, each session consists of rigging our boats, a brief “chalk talk” at the whiteboard covering a specific sailing skill, and a couple of fun sailing drills. Practice sessions are held every Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon once the first Adult Learn to Sail class ends in June through to the Rookie Regatta, which is typically held in early August.
Social Sails are scheduled on some Sundays in lieu of the Coached Practice Session. Social Sails provide a fun opportunity for members to socialize at an HSC-sponsored picnic at noon and then sail together with a safety boat on farther distances around Spruce Run Reservoir. Bring a side, salad, or desert to the noon picnic – HSC provides drinks and sandwiches or burgers and hot dogs plus vegetarian options.
BRING: Life jacket (Coast Guard-approved), closed-toe water shoes, sunscreen, water, sunglasses (if desired) with a safety strap.
