NEW SAILING INSTRUCTIONS FOR 2026 RACES! Prior to races the Race Committee will review the new penalty rule that is the national standard. Penalties Protests should be communicated between sailors and resolved on the racecourse. A boat may take a One-Turn penalty when she has broken one or more rules outside of the mark zone or if she touches any mark of the course while racing. However, if she fouls someone in the zone around a mark other than the starting mark, she may take a 2-Turn penalty. A Turn consists of approximately 360 degrees consisting of one tack or one gybe. Two turns are approximately 720 degrees. (refer to RRS for a full explanation of this rule under Appendix V1, this description does not supersede anything in the RRS). The penalty should be completed as soon as safely possible. Starting and Finishing the Open Fleet (Sunday Races) Spring Season 2026 will be a trial of this process that will or will not continue based upon the executive committee’s determination of its success. All sailboats other than Sunfish will sail in the Open Fleet. Open Fleet will sail first as the majority of boats that will sail in this class are larger and/or faster than Sunfish. For the Open Fleet to be properly scored, a timer must be started at the Open Fleet start and elapsed times must be recorded as each boat finishes or record both the start and finish time of each boat. The process for recording Open Fleet elapsed times requires precision from the race committee. It is essential to have the timing correct within a second of the finish. In order to achieve that, there should be one person calling sail numbers, one person who says “Mark” as the boat crosses the finish line, and a timekeeper who writes down the exact time when “Mark” is called. The Beaufort number (see Appendix A) must be determined and recorded on the score sheet for each race. Official scoring is determined by the HSC Scorekeeper. [FREE] Sailing Refresh Sessions are scheduled! – May 3, 6, 20, 24 and June 3 Feeling a little rusty? All ALTS graduates are invited to come out to one or more Sailing Refresh Sessions. Similar to Coached Practice Sessions, we will rig boats together, have a quick chalk talk to refresh the basics, and then go out and sail for about an hour under safety boat supervision. Sunday sessions start at 12:30PM: 5/3 and 5/24. Wednesday sessions start at 5:30PM: 5/6, 5/20, 6/3. Experienced Sunfish sailors—come out, help get everyone rigged, and join the group on the water. ——————————— Sign up for Racing Skills or Learn to Sail a Force 5 – Saturday May 16th at 9AM – 4PM Racing Skills is open to experienced sailors and novice racers who already participate in club races and want to improve their results. Learn to Sail a Force 5 Both of these classes will be held on Saturday May 16th and there may be some overlap where the classes are combined. Please only sign up for one! ———————— Volunteer as a Class Assistant for ALTS – June and July Volunteers of all levels of experience are welcome and can help with everything from setting up chairs, assisting in the land/water drills, and crewing the safety boats.
