Introduction to Race Committee
CLASS DESCRIPTION: The class goal is to provide participants a basic overview and to develop a basic overview and to develop the confidence needed to join the join the Race Committee team as “RC Crew” team as “RC Crew”. It also provides an up-close view of sailing skills and fun club racing. While on the water, you will meet and get to know many of the other HSC members.
All HSC members assist the Race Committee (Wednesday or Sunday) at least once per season with many members joining RC on both a Wednesday and a Sunday in order to qualify for both Wednesday and Sunday series awards. Being crew on Being crew on Race Committee does not require any experience or a formal class to be on the pontoon boat or skiff to support the chairperson. However, this class was developed to give confidence to members new to Race Committee.
COURSE CONTENT: Students will learn how to get onto and off of the pontoon boat or skiff safely and support activities such as recording race results and raising or lowering race flags, and initiating the starting signals with the guidance of the chairperson.
CLASS SIZE: Limited to 5 students per date
CLASS FEE: Free to members
BRING: Life jacket (Coast Guard-approved), closed-toe water shoes, sunscreen, water, lunch, sunglasses (if desired) with a safety strap.
SCHEDULE: 11am – 4pm Morning instruction on shore followed by supporting the afternoon races. This counts toward one RC commitment.
