Hunterdon Sailing Club's Learn to Sail Class
Course Dates and Time (Rain or Shine – if the weather does not allow us to sail we will do a chalk talk.)
Friday: July 11th – 6 PM until dark, approximately 8:30 PM. Please arrive early.
Saturday: July 12th – 8:30 AM to 4 PM
Sunday: July 13th – 8:30 AM to 12 PM
Location Spruce Run State Park, Clinton, NJ – Boat Launch Area (see picture below)
After going through the main gate/toll, take the first left and follow that road until you see boats parked on the right side of the road. Turn right immediately after the last row of boats and park in the parking lot to your left. You will see the HSC boats and equipment trailers by the water. (see map below)
To Arrive on Time Friday Night
To AVOID route 31 north traffic on Friday evening, for those coming from the East and going West on 78, it is advisable to get off at exit 12 rather than exit 17. This is the ‘back way’ to Spruce Run State Park.
Driving West on I-78, take exit 12 and turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto 173, turn right at the traffic light county road 635. Follow 635 approximately one mile then turn right onto Van Syckles Road. The park entrance is about a mile on the right.
Things to Bring to the Learn to Sail Class
Seriously! Be sure to come prepared. We can’t provide these personal items.
- REQUIRED – Life jacket US Coast Guard approved – positive buoyancy, meaning NO
PFDs with CO2 cartridges. You are REQUIRED to wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket while you are on the water. Violation of this rule will put you on the beach. We prefer the PFDs made for kayaking because they are cut shorter than others making it easier to sit in the cockpit without them riding up. - REQUIRED – Closed-toe water shoes (no flip flops! There are plenty of rocks and such lurking on the lake bottom!)
- REQUIRED – The attached HSC Club Liability Release and Waiver (see below)
- Sun block and a hat, if desired – we will likely be in the sun for hours at a time
- Sunglasses w/safety strap, if desired. There are many glasses at the bottom of the lake from sailors who skipped that safety strap part!
- A shirt to wear under the life jacket and a change of clothes. You will get wet every day.
- Food – be sure to bring a lunch for the mid-day break on Saturday and some snacks to eat during breaks on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning
- Water to drink – LOTS OF WATER
- A notebook or something to take notes
