Little Brown Jug Regatta – Monday, July 4

Attention all sailors…………………………….from the Commodore

Join us on  July 4, 2011 for the Little Brown Jug Regatta!

This is an around-the-lake regatta for all types of boats, followed by a picnic back on shore. All fleets race together with a staggered start based on the Portsmouth rating system. The first boat to reach the finish line wins the Little Brown Jug perpetual trophy. The skipper’s meeting will be at 11 am, with the first start at noon. The race will last about 100 minutes, with the picnic to follow.  Club members do not need to race to come to the picnic. Burgers, condiments and soft drinks are provided by the club. Please bring something to share: last names starting with A-M please bring a side dish, and N-Z please bring a dessert.

Thank you to the Flying Scot Fleet for sponsoring the picnic!

See you all there on Monday, July 4, 2011!

HSC Sailing Rally & Picnic (AKA “The Spruce Run Runaround”) on Sat. May 28

All Hunterdon Sailing Club members new and old are invited to the:

2011 HSC Sailing Rally & Picnic (AKA “The Spruce Run Runaround”)

When: Saturday, May 28th, 2011 (Memorial Day Weekend)

Set-up and Registration: 10 AM to Noon
10 am to 11:30 am: Visitors can stop by to see boats & meet club members
Skipper’s Meeting: 11:30 AM
Le Mans Start: Noon
Picnic: 2 – 4 PM organized by the Open Fleet

Open to all HSC members with and without boats.

All you need are a life jacket, water shoes, weather-appropriate clothes/bathing suit, sun-protection,  and a food/drink contribution to the pot-luck picnic. It’s a great opportunity for new members to get to know the club.

Open to all classes of sailboats, but bring your “Big Boat.” Boat owners are encouraged to load up with new club members as crew. We did not leave anyone on the beach last year and plan to repeat that success this year!

Le Mans Start with boats beached or anchored. It’s not really a race, but it’s fun to start this way.  At the start signal, participants will run to their boats and sail to various check points around the reservoir over a two-hour period. You will find out the rules and other on-the-water activities at the skipper’s meeting. The slowest boat can win, and the fastest boat can lose!

Scoring: It’s a secret, but single-handed boats (Sunfish, Force 5, etc.) can earn extra points if they carry a passenger.

Awards: Many!

A full weekend of sailing

Hunterdon Sailing Club hosted sailing both days this weekend.

Watch video of the Sunfish regatta compliments of Ted Janulis.

On Saturday, the HSC Sunfish fleet hosted the first SANJL regatta for 2011. Seventeen sailors were on the starting line. The day was overcast and cool was wind between 8 and 12 mph from almost due east – from straight over the dam. The conditions were surprisingly challenging as shifts and alternate puffs and lulls kept the lead changing throughout the races.

Sunday, Brent Benson, Race Chair, and Barbara Benson, and Yuko Ichijo, crew ran the Sunday Spring Series Race day 2.
The day was not too promising but it turned out fine with light and gently increasing breezes for all of the three races. No rain! Lots of clouds but sun threatening toward the end.

Photos and race results will be posted soon.

Three… Two… One…

Photos compliments of Nicky Einthoven.

From our Rear Commodore Bill Foster, Race Committee Chair for the Spring Series race day 1:

The 2011 Spring series officially started at Spruce Run this past weekend, with 12 crews across four classes competing in the first races of the year.  Light, shifty conditions were the order of the day, but there was enough breeze for the Flying Scots, Sunfish, Jet 14s and a Force 5 to get in three races.

Gary Nackman with crew Ian dominated the five boat Flying Scot fleet with three bullets, while Gordon Sell and Dave Petersen skippered their boats to second and third-place finishes overall for the day.

For the Sunfish fleet, Simon Bertocci  won the day with a very strong 1-2-1 for four points, with Nicky Einthoven and Susan Mallows rounding out the top three.

Overall it was a great start to the season.  Looking forward to more breeze, and more boats, over the coming weeks.
